Many cars we price have been through an insurance claim. In Alberta, a damaged vehicle becomes a salvage motor vehicle when the insurer replaces it or pays out its value. It can be repaired, but it must pass a Salvage Vehicle Inspection before it is registered again, and the rebuilt status stays with it for life.
Some write-offs are designated non-repairable: no resale value except as parts or scrap metal, such as a car flooded to the bottom of the dashboard. A non-repairable vehicle cannot be registered again. If you sell one without a current inspection certificate, provincial rules require you to tell the buyer in writing.
A write-off still has value as auto parts and metal, and we price non-repairable ones like scrap cars. Our valuation starts with the parts and materials that can be recovered and recycled, then the weight of the shell. That is why two write-offs of the same year can get very different cash offers.
If the car is simply old, our junk car removal in Calgary covers it, and the scrap car removal page explains what happens to vehicles worth only their metal. For the maths behind a quote, read how scrap yards calculate their offers.
